You know a term is well on the way to clichédom when it is misused. I have seen variants of "dialing in" when it was clear that "phoning in" was intended, as in, "He's lost his intensity. He's just phoning in these days."
I never hear "dialing in." I was shocked when, moments after I posted this, I heard a golf commentator say it. Weird.
