Watch out for Islamist
An "Islamist" is someone who follows Islam, not an Islamic fundamentalist. You'll see this used wrong a lot.
And I think an argument can be made that "Islamist" will be misunderstood by a good portion of the readership. I'd use care before letting it stay in a story.

The Webster's New World definition of "Islamist" is somewhere in between:
"an advocate or supporter of Islamic, esp. orthodox Islamic, political rule"
To simply denote someone who follows Islam, use "Muslim."
On a related note, I've been seeing the word "Arabist" stretched beyond recognition recently.
