Go to, Safire fact checkers! Go to!
Languagehat takes William Safire to task for his latest column. It's not the meat of his article (on "go-to" guys and "walk-off" homers) he has a problem with.
being Safire, he's unable to broach the subject he wants to talk about without a cutesy historical lead-in, and since he knows essentially nothing about the history of language and apparently is not subjected to the humiliation of having his column fact-checked, he regularly perpetrates howlers in his tossed-off intros.Safire quotes a "go to" in "Macbeth," but Languagehat says those words don't mean what Safire thinks they mean.
