She's baaaack!

Excuse my absence, friends. I took an impromptu trip to Denver, with no Internet access. And then I got a touch of the flu.

Posts will now resume. In the meantime, check out some new editing links on the right.

Nicole -- I've just recently discovered your blog via a link from Phil Blanchard's site. Are you the very nice young woman on the Post biz desk who was so helpful when I was there for a tryout a couple of years ago? Well, obviously I didn't get that gig, but I ended up in Denver, at the (other) Post. When I saw that you were just here, I thought I'd write (sorry you got the flu here). So what brings you to sleepy li'l Denver, if you don't mind my asking?

Hi, Mark. I'm at the Dallas Morning News, not the Washington Post. So, not me!

And I took a road trip to Denver with some friends to meet another friend who moved there in August.

We had great tickets to a Rockies game on Tuesday. And we took one of my favorite drives, up U.S. Highway 6 out of Golden through the Clear Creek Canyon, then up past Black Hawk. Then we took Highway 46 back down, through Golden Gate Canyon State Park. I do love Colorado.

This was the first time I'd spent much time in the city. I had a lot of fun; Colorado is a hard state to leave.

Well ... that's sort of embarrassing. I'm not sure where I got the idea that you were in D.C. Anyway, the DMN is a great paper, the best in the southern U.S., IMHO. (And yeah, I know Texas isn't part of "the South.") I worked there for a couple of years in the late '80s. Do they still work a four-day week on the desk?
Yes, Colorado is a pretty place. I still haven't gotten used to the nine-month winter, tho. Coors Field is nice, as are the mountains, Boulder, etc. But I'm a native Texan, and it just ain't Texas here.
Anyway, this is probably too much personal info for someone else's blog. If you want to e-mail me, I'm at

Hey, Mark, maybe we can work out a trade. How do you feel about palm trees and warm Gulf breezes? I've had my fill for now.

Love 'em, Pete. In fact, your name sounds familiar -- we probably met on my Great Job Interview Tour of '03. You're in, hmm, St. Pete?

I work at the Tampa Trib but live on the St. Pete side of the Bay. (I worked for a relatively short time at your current paper before this gig.)
